Điện Biên - A hub for top sporting events

ĐBP - Known not only as a “living museum” of national history and a captivating tourist destination, Điện Biên province has, in recent years, also risen as a dynamic sporting center in northern Việt Nam. By successfully hosting a series of national-level tournaments, the province has affirmed its new standing while creating opportunities for athletes nationwide to compete, train, and exchange experiences.

In just the first six months of 2025, Điện Biên hosted four major tournaments: the 5th northern region karate championship, the 19th national pushing stick championship, the 13th national tug of war championship, and the national mixed team badminton championship. These events brought together thousands of elite athletes representing provinces, cities, and sectors across the country.

Earlier in 2024, the province also organized or co-hosted a wide range of national and regional competitions, including the national junior badminton championship, the northern region vovinam championship, the national A-league volleyball championship, the 5th people’s army newspaper cycling Cup, the Ho Chi Minh city television cycling Cup 2024, and the THACO marathon for traffic safety.

According to Phạm Trung Hiếu, Director of the provincial Center for Training and Competition in sports, the successful hosting of these tournaments demonstrates the province’s strong commitment and investment in high-performance sports. “It is also an opportunity to promote Điện Biên’s image-a land of proud history but also dynamism and modernity in cultural and sporting development”, he said.

Hiếu noted that the success of these events further reflects the province’s professional organizing capacity: upgraded facilities, close coordination among departments and localities, and the warm hospitality of Điện Biên residents - all leaving strong impressions on visiting teams.

Beyond hosting, Điện Biên’s athletes have also shown remarkable progress. In the first half of 2025, provincial teams competed in seven major tournaments nationwide, winning 36 medals, including 8 gold, 8 silver, and 20 bronze. At the 5th northern region karate championship, Điện Biên clinched 5 gold, 4 silver, and 6 bronze medals-a breakthrough performance. At the 13th national tug of war championship, the province added 1 gold, 1 silver, and 5 bronze medals.

Karate athlete Lò Văn Biển shared: “Competing on home ground with strong support from local fans gave us tremendous motivation. Our results reflect months of hard work and prove that Điện Biên can go head-to-head with stronger provinces.”

Visiting teams also praised the host’s efforts. Nguyễn Đình Đoài, pushing stick coach of Thái Nguyên province, commented on the 19th national pushing stick championship: “We were truly impressed with Điện Biên’s organization. The arena was modern, logistics well-prepared, and the working style highly professional. The lively atmosphere, enthusiastic crowds, and warm hospitality made us feel right at home. Điện Biên is indeed an ideal venue for major sporting events.”

Challenges remain, such as limited talent scouting from schools and modest socialization of sports activities. To address these, the province has set long-term goals by focusing on its strengths such as karate, badminton, athletics, and taekwondo while expanding summer training classes and grassroots sports clubs to build a pipeline of young athletes.

Once a heroic land etched in history, Điện Biên today stands as a gathering place for national and regional sports. Its growing achievements in competitive sports have become a new source of pride, alongside its glorious past victory.
